Free Merge Unallocated Space without Losing Data in Windows 10

When much data is stored on your disk, the disk space is not enough. While opening the Windows 10 Disk Management, do you find the unallocated space on the hard drive? If there are two unallocated spaces, you probably want to merge them into one and create a new and big partition with the unallocated space for the better disk space usage. In addition, low disk space issue often appears, especially for C system partition. Suppose that there is one unallocated space, to add unallocated space to C drive in Windows 10 can be a good idea. Here in the following content, we will show you how to make full use of the free disk space by merging unallocated space in these two situations.

How to Merge Unallocated Space in Windows 10

Situation 1: Combine Two Unallocated Spaces

When two unallocated spaces are on your hard drive, you should know three cases: these two unallocated spaces are separate on the same disk, they are adjacent on a disk larger than 2TB, and they are on two disks.  How to combine them to create a big partition in Windows 10?

  • Case 1: Merge Two Non-adjacent Unallocated Spaces on the Same Disk

Here let’s look at one figure to learn this case:

You know these two unallocated spaces are not adjacent from the screenshot. In order to combine them together, you need to use a piece of professional partition manager since Windows Disk Management can’t perform the merging operation. Here you can use MiniTool Partition Wizard Free Edition in Windows 10.

Step 1: Click “Move/Resize Partition” in “Change Partition” menu after selecting E drive.

Step 2: Then exchange the location of partition E and its adjacent unallocated space.

Step 3: Then select partition F and click “Move/Resize Partition” feature to move the location of partition F by moving the handle towards the left side or right side.

Step 4: Then after go back to the main interface, you can preview that these two unallocated spaces are merged into one. Just click “Apply” to execute this operation. Next, you can create a large partition with the unallocated space.

  • Case 2: Merge Unallocated Spaces on a Larger than 2TB Disk

If you have a disk which is larger than 2TB, but it is an MBR disk. Then in Windows Disk Management, you will find there are two unallocated spaces.

In this case, you should convert the MBR disk to GPT. As you know, Windows 10 Disk Management only allows you to perform the conversion unless all partitions are deleted. Fortunately, you can still use MiniTool Partition Wizard. In the main interface of this partition software, you can see only one allocated space, which is not the same as it is in Disk Management. Just right click on the target disk and use “Convert MBR Disk to GPT” to do this conversion without losing data in Windows 10. Then you can see the two unallocated space become one in Disk Management.

  • Case 3: Create a Volume on Two Unallocated Spaces on Two Disks

If there are two different hard disks on your computer and each disk has an unallocated space, how to merge the two unallocated spaces for a big partition? As a matter of fact, it is very easy. You can use Disk Management to convert these two disks to dynamic disks and then create a new spanned volume with “New Spanned Volume” feature.

Situation 2: Combine Unallocated Space with Partition C

If there is only one unallocated space on your disk, but partition C is running out of space. In this situation, you can add the unallocated space to partition. How to achieve this aim in Windows 10? Usually, you consider using Disk Management to extend the partition. However, this tool only allows you to merge a partition with the unallocated space which must be on the adjacent right side of the partition.

In order to merge free space into the primary partition, MiniTool Partition Wizard is still recommended to you. After launching this partition manager, select the partition C to use “Extend Partition”. Then choose to take free space from the unallocated space. By moving the handle to the right side or left side, you can decide how much free space you take.

Now all situations about how to merge unallocated space in Windows 10 are introduced to you. If you are experiencing one of the above situations, just try the corresponding solution. If you find this software useful, you can download it here for free: https://www.partitionwizard.com/download.html
